Old Gringo and his posse are greeting officials

Thunder Ranch is located about 6 miles northeast out of historic La Grange, Texas in the heart of Texas.  In January 2004, we decided to find a weekend escape from the big city (Houston, Texas) and found this patch of land remotely nestled adjacent to a good sized cattle ranch. This equates to few neighbors, lots of trees, ponds, creeks, wildlife, lots of stars, and quiet- "perfect, we'll take it"!

Thunder Ranch is located near La Grange, Texas in the heart of Texas Bluebonnet country

So, now we have land and an agricultural tax exeption on the property. How do we keep the exemption? After inquirying around, we found out Texas longhorns could be a solution. It turns out that longhorn cattle are extremely self sufficient , desease resistent, and are generally just plain easy keepers. If we had a couple two or three we could keep our tax exemption and could have some interesting pets with minimal maintenance.  And, as the marketing slogan goes........"you can't have just one!" We are now a year later with twenty five and multiplying!

Once we got our first one, we fell in love with the magesty of the Texas longhorn. The are no other cattle that have such diversity in color and personality as longhorns. Gentle disposition by nature, longhorns make it easy to walk amongst  them and to see how they interact with each other and yourself. They can even be trained to eat treats out of your hand, though you really have keep a guarded eye on those horns!

Molly is the official calf inspector. She conducts a rigorous inspection of all new calves followed by a kiss on the nose if she approves. Good moma cows respect Molly's authority at Thunder Ranch!

.......and the mail fetcher!

There are many reasons why many weekend ranchers, like my wife and I, raise longhorns.  At Thunder Ranch, we have chosen to breed show quality cattle with a diversity of color and pedigree, along with some emphasis on the marketability of horn genectics. We will never be cattle barons or sell enough to be called the longhorn shopping mall.  But what we are striving to attain is a reputation for breeding quality animals that are healthy, have good disposition, and are marketable.  After all, you can't keep all those babies no matter how cute they are!

Most of our cattle are for sale.  Some may be priced higher because we really don't want to turn loose of them.  At this time we are selling all cattle by "private treaty", which simply means you can come visit the pasture and pick them out! Visit our site, see if any of them are what your looking for, and if they are not, give me a call or email and we can just talk longhorns. That is the best part of raising these amazing creatures, they always give you something to talk about! Thanks for visiting our site. Check back regularly for updates.

"Come visit anytime!"
